First Year: Setting Your Academic Foundation
Your primary goal during your first two semesters is establishing your advisory team and formalizing your dynamic research/coursework plan.
Role of the Advisory Committee
Your master's graduate advisory committee guides your research thesis design and monitors progress. Core operational responsibilities include:
- Collaborating to finalize your formal Graduate Study Plan (GSP) by your second semester.
- Guiding research methodology, safety compliance, and operational project scopes.
- Conducting annual evaluations and submitting report documentation to the Graduate School.
- Evaluating and signing off on your public defense performance and final written thesis.
Finalizing Appointment & Submission
The process is completely electronic. The tracker should be launched via the digital forms portal by you or your department's graduate program coordinator.
Go to Appointment of Committee FormCommittee Composition Rules
The advisory board must consist of a **minimum of 3 UAF faculty members** holding appropriate master's or terminal degrees.
- Your committee chair must be an active, approved faculty member within your main discipline.
- An additional member outside your immediate department path or an external professional specialist may join with departmental clearance.
Milestone Action & Rules
Map out your full timeline of coursework and mandatory thesis credits (typically 699 rows). Your approved GSP stands as your definitive contract protecting degree pathways, provided you continue to show continuous programmatic enrollment.
How to Build Your GSP
- Consult Catalog: Match choices directly against your entry year benchmarks within the official .
- Input Chronologically: List past, active, and prospective course models. Tick "add another" to populate extra registration lines.
The 2nd Semester Deadline
Both your Advisory Committee Form and your GSP must be fully routed and approved by the Graduate School before the end of your second semester. Delaying compliance impacts your standing.

You can use our , pdf template, or create your own self-eval template.
