Spring 2026
From the chancellor
Dear UAF community,
At UAF, legacy is not something we talk about in the abstract. It is something we build — through generosity, through mentorship and through a belief that what we create today should serve students long after we are gone.
That legacy is powerfully evident in the work of our alumni. For nearly a century, the UAF Alumni Association has stood as a steady partner in advancing opportunity for students . In 2026, the association awarded a record $15,000 in grants to student organizations, helping revive programs like Sigma Tau Delta, strengthen academic communities and ensure students have access to the tools and experiences that make campus life meaningful. As the association looks ahead to its centennial in 2027, a new $100,000 Centennial Gift campaign is building the foundation for the next hundred years of impact .
We also honor the legacy of individuals whose commitment to UAF continues to shape our future. Former music professor David Stech, who taught at UAF from 1972 to 2008, left a $75,000 bequest to endow a scholarship fund for keyboard students . With additional contributions, the endowment has grown beyond $100,000 and will soon begin supporting students pursuing their passion for music . In November 2025, we dedicated the Davis Concert Hall’s Gress-Miles pipe organ in his memory — a fitting tribute to a teacher, scholar and musician whose influence will resonate for generations .
These stories remind us that philanthropy at UAF takes many forms. It funds student organizations rebuilding after disruption. It equips clubs and research symposia. It endows scholarships that reduce financial barriers and open doors. It preserves history and honors those who devoted their lives to teaching and learning.
When alumni give, when faculty leave enduring gifts and when our community rallies around students, we are not simply supporting programs. We are strengthening Alaska’s future.
Thank you for investing in UAF — and in the generations of Nanooks who will carry this work forward.
