The Kodiak district encompasses an archipelago of numerous islands south of Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula with a total population of about 12,500. At 3,670 square miles, Kodiak Island is the second-largest island in the United States. 

The largest town is Kodiak, population 5,500, with myriad ethnicities. Kodiak has a large Alaska Native Sugpiaq population as well as Asian, Filipino and Hispanic peoples. Other villages and port towns include Akhiok, Karluk, Larsen Bay, Old Harbor, Ouzinki and Port Lions. Commercial fishing is the dominant industry and a large Coast Guard base is located south of the city of Kodiak. 

Outreach includes home, health and family development; and 4-H and youth development.

In Alaska, fishing for dinner is a favorite summer activity. If your river or ocean adventure nets you more than just one dinner, you should be prepared to preserve your harvest for enjoyment long after summer ends.&/ces/districts/kodiak/160; In this webinar, Leslie Shallcross, health, home and family development agent with the UAF Cooperative Extension Service, will demonstrate how to properly preserve your catch so you can fill your pantry or freezer with safe, high-quality and delicious fish. She will cover preserving your fish catch through canning, smoking or freezing.

AK Experience Camp is a fun-filled, five-day residential camp in Haines hosted by Alaska 4-H at the Echo Ranch Haines facility across from the Rainbow Glacier, 169 Rainbow Camp Road, Haines, Alaska.&/ces/districts/kodiak/160;

Campers from 11- to 18-years-old, stay in rustic cabins, swim, hike, zip-line, kayak, fish, forage, craft, learn outdoor skills (like shelter and fire building) and more.

Campers will also prepare artistic and culinary entries for the Southeast Alaska State Fair, where they will spend the day enjoying the exhibits and performers, helping with the recycling program and leading fun activities of their choosing.

The week will begin with an early ferry from Juneau on Monday and finish with a ferry back on Friday evening.
