Changes coming to Kaltura
April 29, 2026
On May 7, Kaltura settings will be updated to improve video accessibility and streamline workflow. Here is everything you need to know about the changes and how they help the university meet Web Content Accessibility Guidelines AA 2.1 requirements for 99% accurate captions.
Better captions for Zoom recordings
Currently, when Zoom recordings sync to Kaltura, the Zoom transcript blocks Kaltura from creating its own captions. This backup feature is being disabled so Kaltura can take the lead.
- Why the change? Kaltura’s machine-generated captions are more accurate and follow best practices for line length and punctuation, making them easier to read than Zoom’s.
- Editing is faster: While all machine captions require a quick human eye review for accuracy, Kaltura's higher-quality captions make the editing process much faster.
- Speaker labels: Unlike Zoom, Kaltura does not automatically label speakers. You can add labels manually in the Kaltura editor or, if you prefer, download the original transcript from Zoom and upload it to Kaltura yourself.
New tools in Blackboard and Canvas
Two powerful tools are being brought directly into the LMS "Kaltura My Media" tool (currently only available in MediaSpace):
- Caption and enrich: This allows you to manually request machine captions for older Zoom recordings or imported YouTube videos where captions didn't run automatically.
- Media stitching: You can now combine multiple images and videos (up to five) into a single entry. Once your new video is "stitched" together, Kaltura will automatically generate a fresh set of captions for it.
Quick tips for success
Pro tip: Always finish trimming or clipping your video before you start editing the captions. This ensures you don't waste time correcting text for footage you plan to delete.
- Accessibility: You can use the Kaltura built-in caption editor to manage both standard captions and Extended Audio Descriptions.
