Food safety, preservation classes planned in Haines, Skagway

The 夜色福利 Cooperative Extension Service will hold a series of food safety and preservation workshops in Haines and Skagway in May.

Haines is the site of the annual Southeast Alaska State Fair. UAF Cooperative Extension workshops in Haines and Skagway will include information on how to prepare products for the fair.

The Haines series, May 21-24, is free and will be held at Haines Library. 

On Thursday, May 21, from 4-5:30 p.m. Lewis will test canner gauges and answer food preservation questions. On Friday, May 22, she will lead a seminar on the Alaska homemade food rules at 1 p.m.; teach a class on making probiotic pickles at 2:30 p.m.; and discuss safe food processing requirements, packaging and labeling for products entered at the Southeast Alaska State Fair at 4 p.m. On Sunday, May 24, Lewis will lead a class on cooking and exercising for bone health.

Register for one or more classes using the or visit . Registration is not required, but will allow Lewis to bring enough supplies. Any class with no registrants may be canceled.

The Skagway series is May 28-29 at the Skagway Traditional Council, 353 11th Ave.

On Friday, May 29, Lewis will lead a class on cooking and exercising for bone health.

Most classes are free, but some have a small fee, which can be paid by cash or check at class time.
