New online format for RCR training launching in Canvas
March 18, 2026
The Office of Research Integrity announces a new online format for Responsible Conduct of Research training, now available through Canvas. This updated format allows participants to complete most of the training independently and at their own pace, providing greater flexibility while still meeting federal training expectations. The Canvas course includes learning modules, readings, case studies and assessments designed to strengthen understanding of ethical research practices and the responsible conduct of research.
This training fulfills the National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health requirements for formal RCR instruction.
RCR training is required for undergraduate students, graduate students and postdoctoral researchers supported by NSF awards. It is also an NIH requirement that all BLaST Mentors, Scholars, UREs and participants in other NIH-funded projects complete RCR training.
RCR training covers the core norms, principles, regulations and rules governing the practice of research, including topics such as research misconduct, authorship and publication practices, data management, mentoring responsibilities, collaborative research, and conflicts of interest. This training is considered a best practices course for individuals seeking to deepen their knowledge of ethical research practices and responsible scholarship. It is also an excellent professional development opportunity for those interested in pursuing or advancing a research career.
The RCR training offered through ORI is open to all UAF-, UAS-, and Ilisagvik-affiliated individuals, including faculty, graduate students, staff and undergraduate students.
The training consists of two required components:
- Part One: Completion of an online CITI Responsible Conduct of Research training module.
- Part Two: Completion of the RCR Canvas course
Participants must complete both parts in order to receive an RCR certificate of completion.
Important for NIH-funded participants:
- If you are receiving NIH funding, please note that this virtual course alone does not meet NIH’s requirements. You will be required to complete an additional one-hour in-person RCR training session.
