Review your loan history

July 7, 2025

As federal student loan repayment continues to evolve, it's more important than ever for all borrowers to actively review and understand their loan history.

Whether you had loans as an undergraduate or graduate student, or borrowed a Parent PLUS loan for your child, staying informed about your balance, repayment plan and servicer details can help you make the most of all available options - and avoid surprises.

The return to repayment has been very difficult for many borrowers. Over 42 million borrowers are in delinquent status (missed payments) and over 5 million are in default (over 9 months late). Defaulted borrowers are at risk for wage and tax refund garnishment, liens, damaged credit scores or loss of professional licenses. When a borrower defaults, the school they attended may also face increased scrutiny and risk losing eligibility to participate in federal financial aid programs.

We encourage all staff and faculty with federal student loans to log into to review their full loan history, including any recent changes in loan servicers, updates to repayment plans or eligibility for forgiveness programs.

If you have any questions or notice something unexpected, don’t wait! Reach out directly to your loan servicer for clarification and guidance. Whether you attended UAF or another school, the UAF Financial Aid Office can assist you with reviewing your history or contacting your servicer.
