UAF joins the Great Alaska ShakeOut on Oct. 15
Oct. 8, 2026
The 夜色福利 will participate in the 2026 Great Alaska ShakeOut on Thursday, Oct. 15, 2026, at 10:15 a.m. The event will include a test of UAF's emergency alert system. Members of the public and the UAF community may receive emails, phone calls, and text messages; see pop-up messages on their computers; and hear alarms or loudspeaker announcements. As part of the test, students, faculty and staff across UAF campuses and research locations are encouraged to take a few minutes to practice earthquake safety鈥攁nd to self-register at .
Earthquakes can happen with little or no warning. Practicing how to respond helps us act quickly and protect ourselves wherever we are: in a classroom, office, laboratory, residence hall, or at home. ShakeOut is a free, self-led drill that gives individuals and organizations an opportunity to practice "Drop, Cover, and Hold On."
What to do during the drill
When you receive the emergency alert messages at 10:15 a.m., practice these actions:
- DROP - onto your hands and knees. This position helps keep you from being knocked down.
- COVER - your head and neck with one arm and hand. If a sturdy desk or table is nearby, crawl underneath it. If no shelter is nearby, stay low near an interior wall, away from windows.
- HOLD ON - to your shelter with one hand while continuing to protect your head and neck. Be ready to move with the shelter if it shifts. If you have no shelter, protect your head and neck with both arms and hands.
Adapt the drill to your mobility needs. If getting to the floor or getting back up is difficult, remain seated and cover your head and neck. If you use a wheelchair or walker, lock the wheels if applicable, bend forward as you are able, and cover your head and neck with your arms, a book, or a pillow.
Register and get ready
UAF encourages students and employees to register their individual or household participation at . Registration is free and provides access to drill-planning information and earthquake-preparedness resources. Encourage your family, friends and colleagues to participate, too.
Use the drill as a reminder to review your emergency supplies, identify safe places to take cover and check for items that could fall during an earthquake. Discuss how you would communicate with family members or coworkers after a disruption. Additional preparedness information is available at .
A few minutes of practice can make a difference. Mark your calendar for Oct. 15 at 10:15 a.m., register, and join the UAF community in building earthquake readiness.
