Your education

Associate of Applied Science Degree (A.A.S.)

The Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree in professional piloting is a two-year program designed to prepare you for required FAA written exams for piloting certificate ratings.

Program coursework will develop your knowledge through a series of aviation piloting courses in ground school for private and commercial flying, arctic survival, weather and aircraft maintenance. Rated pilots or military aviators may be eligible for credit based upon experience and FAA certificates.

UAF does not offer flight instruction.

Unmanned Aircraft Operations (O.E.)

This occupational endorsement will provide students with skills to operate small camera drones and FPV race drones in a legal, safe and structured manner, and provide basic troubleshooting and repair skills.

Classes include indoor and outdoor flight training, FAA flight planning and other legal aspects of operating drones. Students will assemble, fly and repair drones including advanced composite repair and part fabrication.

This 17-credit program is designed for those who operate drones in real estate, survey work, public employees (such as first responders) and even hobbyists. It prepares students to take the FAA Remote Pilot Certificate under the FAA Small UAS Rule (107). Students must be 16 years old before the start of the first semester.

Aviation Technology (Minor)

The minor in aviation technology is designed provide you the opportunity to become familiar with the aviation field, with particular emphasis on the use of aviation as a tool and economic process within the Alaska environment.

This minor is a great choice for Bachelor of Arts degree-seeking students who need to satisfy their minor requirement or Associate of Arts students who want to explore aviation technology as an area of interest.

With a shortage of pilots predicted in the coming years and more pilots and aircraft per capita than any other state, the importance of aviation to the Alaska economy and life-style is unparalleled. Aviation technology is both interesting and challenging and, if you are motivated and qualified, it can be a career to last a lifetime.

Delivery:

Program is completed through in-person courses.

Scheduling:

Classes are primarily offered during the evening.

When to Start:

Students start their program in the fall, spring or summer semesters.

Location:

The program is located in the UAF CTC Aviation Facility on the east ramp of the Fairbanks International Airport.

Program highlights

Class size is limited, in order for students to receive individual help and attention. Your instructors are all experienced aviation professionals. Not only do they have excellent technical skills and knowledge, they also know how to communicate that knowledge to you.

If you are a rated pilot or military aviator, you may be eligible for credit based upon previous training and experience. Upon completion of the A.A.S. degree, many students continue their education by seeking the Bachelor of Applied Arts & Science degree.
