UAF is requiring that all individuals interested in submitting an appropriations request to the Congressional delegation complete the Google request form. If you submit more than one request, please clearly rank your requests.

Friday Focus: Transformative academic journey

This past week I participated in some of my favorite events at UAF, welcoming students to the start of a new fall semester. All week, hundreds of new UAF students came onto campus from across the state and around the world to start their educational journey. Each one of them took a unique path to get to this starting line, and each one of them will make the UAF experience their own. This year's incoming first-year students are arriving at UAF at a time of great transition and opportunity.

Students2Startups program provides hands-on startup experience

Introducing Nanook Technology Services' website debut

Nanook Technology Services is the new name for UAF IT and the user services team formerly embedded in OIT. Under the direction of Vice Chancellor for Administrative Services Julie Queen and Chief Information Technology Officer Ben Shier, Nanook Technology Services has been created as UAF’s IT unit.

The UAF Emergency Scholarship is a one-time resource available through the Financial Aid Office that helps address the immediate and unexpected needs of students. After submitting an application and following review by a committee with more than 10 departments currently represented from across campus, students are able to seek assistance throughout the school year.

Growing up in interior Alaska, fall time represents a season of transitions. The long summer days begin to shorten. The air gets a little crisper. The leaves begin to change color. And we at UAF are busy preparing for the start of the new academic year. Our various campuses from Dillingham to Fairbanks and everywhere in between are teeming with the energy of students, faculty and staff. It is a great time to be a part of the UAF community. An aspect of UAF that I appreciate most is our enduring commitment to increasing the accessibility of higher education.

Juneau has worked in the hospitality industry for 26 years with a focus in culinary arts and a passion to serve others. Student loan repayment restart

The three-year pause on federal student loan repayment will end in September 2023. Millions of borrowers nationwide will have a student loan payment due in October. The UAF Financial Aid Office is available to assist borrowers in gathering information they may need to contact their loan servicer for assistance.

As a university, we have been running lean for years due to budget reductions, COVID-19, and a change in the national employment market. Some areas have been so thin that losing one staff member leads to critical functions going undone. Over the last several years, we have also seen this compounded due to retirements that cause a loss of institutional knowledge. We rely heavily on those around us to train and pass on historical knowledge. During lean times, such as the past few years, it has been apparent that there is a need for strategic training to maintain and pass on important university knowledge.

Friday Focus: Thoughts on beyond line of sight

For those of us dancing in school gyms in the early 1980s, Love is in the Air is a familiar tune. As American Bandstand would say - nice rhythm, easy to dance to. For those of us at UAF in 2023, we could morph that into Drones are in the Air, maybe do a remix to zhuzh it up. This new song, though, will not be a one-hit wonder if Cathy Cahill and the ACUASI band have anything to say about it! ACUASI has been around for over 20 years but for the last few years has really taken off (pun intended) with the growing interest in the state of Alaska in developing a drone economy. This is a heavy lift, but the team is all in. And, with the additional funding for economic development from the Governor, tremendous progress has been made.

Friday Focus: Combining efforts

For the past six months, both the Department of Equity and Compliance and the Center for Student Rights and Responsibilities have been working in the same space and under a shared director. This combination was a temporary measure to maintain campus commitment to safety, compliance, and care while recruiting for a new Equity and Compliance Director. However, working together has allowed our offices to find efficiencies as well as opportunities to enhance services provided to the university community. It quickly became clear there would be a benefit to permanently integrating our efforts and expertise.

The ҹɫ¸£Àû, Community and Technical College celebrates the remarkable legacy of beloved CTC Dean Michele Stalder in supporting Alaska students and connecting them to vital jobs within the state. After more than four decades of service to the university, Dean Stalder will retire on Aug. 1. All faculty and staff are invited to a retirement celebration on Thursday, July 27, from 4-6 p.m.
