Automotive Technology
Your education
The automotive technology certificate program will prepare you for entry-level automotive technician positions. The program emphasizes hands-on training and in-class experience to teach you how to perform under-hood and under-car maintenance inspections, determine root causes of equipment failures, and make necessary repairs to the complex systems that make up today’s vehicles.
Courses will develop your knowledge and skills in the following areas of automotive technology: electricity/electronics, brakes, suspension/steering and alignment and engine performance and repair.
Your career
Highly trained technicians are needed to be able to understand, diagnose and repair modern automobiles. Graduates will qualify for entry-level positions within the automotive service and repair industry and be work-ready in the areas of electricity/electronics, brakes, suspension/steering and alignment, engine performance and engine repair.
Successful graduates go on to careers in dealerships, independent shops and fleet repair facilities.
Program delivery
Delivery:
Program is completed through in-person courses in which students receive both classroom and practical hands-on learning experiences. Class size is limited in order for students to receive individual help and attention.
The program is a cohort based program that accepts up to 18 students per cohort. Each student cohort progresses through a pre-determined sequence of courses each semester.
Scheduling:
Classes are offered Monday – Friday during the evening.
When to Start:
Students can join a student cohort beginning in the fall or spring semester.
Location:
Program is located at the Hutchison Center, 3770 Geist Road in the Hutchison Institute of Technology. Students will work in a fully-equipped modernized shop boasting the latest tools and equipment, to ensure that students receive education and training that meets current industry standards.

The instructors are experienced professionals who not only have excellent technical skills and knowledge, but also know how to communicate that knowledge to their students. Instructors can also work with students when they are done with the program to obtain employment within the local industry.
Other details
DRIVER’S LICENSES: A valid driver’s license and a clean driving record are required for admission to this program.
REQUIRED TOOLS: A well-equipped toolbox is the lifeblood of a professional automotive technician. Possessing a basic set of tools as a student is essential to developing the skills and professionalism expected within the industry. See your program advisor for more information about the list of tools that students are required to obtain upon entry into the program.
