Diesel / Heavy Equipment
Your education
The diesel/heavy equipment certificate is a one-year program designed to provide you the education and training to maintain and repair heavy equipment and trucks. The program emphasizes hands-on training and in-class experience to teach you how to perform preventative maintenance inspections, determine causes of equipment problems and make necessary repairs and adjustments from tune-ups to complete engine and equipment rebuilding.
Courses included in the certificate program will teach you how to work on diesel engines, electrical and air systems, engine electronics, hydraulics, transmissions, differentials, crawler tractor undercarriages, steering and final drives. You will also complete courses in basic equipment and truck operation, rigging/lifting safety, diesel emissions, heavy duty breaking systems, diesel fuel injection, and industrial fabrication.
Your career
Diesel mechanics may be hired as mechanics on engines, automatic transmissions, drive trains, electrical systems, suspension and steering, hydraulics and air systems. Diesel mechanics diagnose, repair, weld and fine-tune the working parts of buses, trucks, construction machinery and generators. Demand is on the rise for highly skilled diesel and heavy equipment mechanics. Students completing this program are qualified to work for independent diesel and heavy equipment repair businesses, contractors, mines and machinery dealerships.

Delivery:
Program is completed through in-person courses in which students receive both classroom and practical hands-on learning experiences. Class size is limited in order for students to receive individual help and attention.
The program is a cohort based program that accepts up to 22 students per cohort. Each student cohort progresses through a pre-determined sequence of courses throughout the fall and spring semesters.

The program begins with a new cohort of students at the beginning of the Fall semester each year.
Location:
Program is located at the Hutchison Center, 3770 Geist Road in the Hutchison Institute of Technology. Students will work out of a fully-equipped modernized shop boasting the latest tools and equipment to ensure that students receive education and training that meets current industry standards.

Class size is limited in order for students to receive individual help and attention. The instructors are all experienced professionals who not only have excellent technical skills and knowledge, but they also know how to communicate that knowledge to their students.

FALL START ONLY: Enrollment for this program is available during the fall semester only.
CREDIT BY EXAMINATION AVAILABLE: A student may request credit by examination for any DSLT class. See your program advisor for details.
REQUIRED TOOLS: Tools are the lifeblood of a working diesel/heavy equipment mechanic. Possessing a basic set of tools as a student is essential to developing the skills and professionalism expected within the industry. See your program advisor for more information about the list of tools that students are required to obtain upon entry into the program.
